*Shifting attention away from the death of former NFL player Joe McKnight, Sheriff Newell Normand decided to spend a chunk of his press conference today firing back at critics of his investigation into the shooting.
Normand brought with him hate mail he says he and other leaders have received, and read them to reporters without bothering to edit out the N-words and homophobic slurs that were present.
Asked why he decided to read the incendiary letters out loud, Normand says he wanted to show people how “crazy” things have gotten, and that cops are getting harassed for doing their jobs.
He then offered up an anecdote about a white citizen’s concern over being shot in a similar fashion by a white motorist. Normand said he told the person that based on their statistics, black people are more likely to be killed by black people in his parish.
