*Just when it looked as though “Empire” had found its footing again, something, or in this case, someone goes whack. This time it’s Jamal.

Lucious and Cookie’s middle son—or as his father calls him—“The gay one”—was tripping hard on his meds in Wednesday’s episode. So much so that pops was about to drop him from the label because he’s not tracking well on Empire Live and he’s been slow to produce any songs with a decent hook.

Given that Jamal was always the voice of calm and reason within the Lyon clan, this new turn is really distressing for viewers who would like to see at least one relatable character on the show. Perhaps, however, there’s a point to all of this, which will be revealed later.

In other scenes, Shyne (Xzibit) was upset over Freda’s refusal to sign with his Empire-endorsed label. Cookie loses her cool when Jamal, in an attempt to inspire his music, screens some old home movies of his mom and her sisters. Apparently, there’s something in Cookie’s past that she’d rather not revisit.

Her meltdown didn’t play well with her new man Angelo (Taye Diggs). He had set up a meeting with Cookie and his mom (Phylicia Rashad) and his boo was a no-show. She convinced him to reschedule and she’d host a dinner at her home. In an attempt to impress Angelo’s mama, an old school AKA—the kind who summers at the Vineyard—Cookie, after getting a charm school crash course from her older sister Candice (Vivica A. Fox), redecorated her whole place and toned down her wardrobe to look the part of a future mayor’s significant other.

Mom saw right through that, however, and it didn’t help that Jamal showed up high, a frustrated Hakeem rushed in with his daughter, who was wailing at the top of her lungs; and then Lucious and Anika busted in looking for their child. Exasperated but not defeated, Cookie finally squashed the pretense and explained to mom that this was who she was and that she wouldn’t trade her family for anything.

It worked. It seems that Mrs. Cosby has a great deal of respect for people who keep it real. That’s our Cookie.
