*Lifetime has released the first trailer for its remake of “Beaches,” starring Nia Long and Idina Menzel in the roles originated by Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey in the 1988 film.
The network update, premiering Jan. 21 at 8 p.m., still tells the story of their friendship, with all its ups and downs, sustaining both women over decades.
The trailer shows Menzel in Midler’s original role of CC and Long as Hersey’s Hillary meeting as kids for the first time on the boardwalk – now set in Venice Beach instead of the original’s Atlantic City, N.J.
Snippets showing the arc of their friendship follow, as CC pursues her acting and singing career and Hillary welcomes the birth of her daughter.
The remake has CC building her career in Los Angeles, whereas the original – directed by the late Garry Marshall – took the young pair to NYC as CC made a name for herself on Broadway.
Lifetime’s movie will include new versions of Midler’s Grammy-winning “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “The Glory of Love,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
