RECAP: EMPIRE (S3, EP5) CUPID KILLS

*For the first 20 minutes it looked as though Empire was toning down the drama a bit in favor of heating up some relationships—like that really strange ménage a trois that closed the show.

It quickly, however, returned to form Wednesday night when the beef between Lucious and Shine spiraled out of control after Shine pulled a fast one during contract negotiations between Empire and Nessa. Hakeem also got played when he tried to use his “bad boy” ways to woo Nessa. Maybe Empire’s bargaining chip will be Lucious’ oldest son. The bipolar widower and Shine’s protégé couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other.

And later their hands when they took their infatuation to another level after the Wharton-educated Dre pulled out his West Philly card. Dude even held his own in a fight against Shine when Lucious tried to strong-arm him into signing a contract for Nessa.

Jamal, still struggling with his PTSD and feeling guilty about Freda being on lockdown, went back to the joint to check on her and found his former collaborator looking as though she had run into Mike Tyson in his prime. Freaked by her condition, Jamal used his juice to get Freda a new hearing, telling the judge that Empire was to blame for the temporary insanity that led to Freda nearly killing him. She’s now out on bail.

Guess who was behind the beat down? And, guess who got played—again!

And while you would think that there would be nothing more improbable than a Cookie and Angelo romance, there is. Not only does Angelo take her to an opera (guess Mariah wasn’t available this week), but when he introduces her to his Jack & Jill friends, who are going on about where they summer, Cookie drops this bomb: “Actually I summered in Connecticut…At the Danbury Federal Institution for Women.”

Snap.

Sadly, after the best bathroom scene ever between Cookie and the Jills, the ex-Mrs. Lyon exits stage left leaving her Jack with nothing but some Cookie crumbs. Much to Lucious’ chagrin, Angelo’s not about to give up—especially after getting some pointers from the pill-popping Jamal. Hopefully he’ll be knocked out when Shine and his boys go Lyon hunting next week.
