TV One’s NewsOne Now Panel: Clinton Scores Victory Over Trump in Presidential Debate (WATCH)

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– News One Now Host and Managing Editor Roland S. Martin and panelists Color of Change co-founder Rashad Robinson, political editor Lauren Victoria Burke, George Washington University Law Professor Spencer A. Overton, Director of Progressive Media for Hillary Clinton Zerlina Maxwell spoke about the presidential candidates performance during last night’s debate.

During the debate, Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump tackled issues such as criminal justice reform, the release of Trump’s taxes, the importance of tackling American housing issues, and Trump’s newfound admittance of President Barack Obama’s natural citizenship.

“Donald Trump has had an opportunity over and over again to apologize for this,” said Robinson. “He had an opportunity last night to say, ‘hey I was wrong and apologize.’ It also speaks to the fault that the problem is when he is called out and when a problem that is elevated he doesn’t apologize and putting a man or a woman into the White House that refuses to acknowledge when they make mistakes and to apologize saying, ‘I was wrong’ when all the evidence mounts that is dangerous. It is dangerous to have someone in charge of our military, in charge of our government that can’t say that they were wrong.”

“I think he was bragging about perpetuating this racist lie,” said Maxwell. “That’s the part that was so disgusting because I think that as black people we were completely offended the entire time. How dare you come after our decorated accomplished intelligent first Black president? How dare you? So I just feel like he [Trump] has some nerve coming out there last night and essentially giving himself credit for perpetuating a lie and then admitting that the president is American. We all knew that; thanks for joining us.”

“I think it does matter that the same rules apply to everyone,” said Overton. “I think black people do care about that. So this notion that someone who claims to be a billionaire paying maybe no taxes, we don’t know, and a working class family paying significant taxes, you know, it’s the same thing as the police  context. It’s kind of like the same rules that apply to everyone else should apply to police and the same rules should apply to Donald Trump.”
