*“Greenleaf” is the most watched new cable show of the summer, according to the OWN network, and is the #1 original cable series on Wednesday nights for women, Shadow and Act reports.
The series delivered record numbers with its season finale, bringing in 2.4 million viewers, making it the network’s most watched and highest rated Wednesday telecast in network history.
The dramatic series follows “the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family with scandalous secrets and lies, and their sprawling Memphis megachurch with predominantly African-American members.” The cast includes Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, Lamman Rucker, Kim Hawthorne, Lovie Simone, Merle Dandridge, Desiree Ross, Deborah Joy Winans, Tye White, GregAlan Williams, Benjamin Patterson, Anna Diop, Terri J. Vaughn, and Oprah Winfrey.

“Greenleaf” has received positive reviews from critics, with most praising Dandridge, Whitfield and David’s performances. Lynn recently spoke to Vulture about the show’s story line focused on police brutality, gun violence, and the Black Lives Matter movement, and explained how seeing fiction and real life blur affected her.
“I wish that it was fiction. For this to happen in the little sleepy capital of Louisiana is tragic and troubling, frightening,” he said. “As a Baton Rouge woman, my heart for Alton Sterling and his family, my heart for those policemen and their families — I have compassion and empathy and such frustration for all of it happening. I also just want everyone to realize two wrongs don’t make a right. None of it needs to be romanticized. We, as citizens, need to be extremely pragmatic and very clear.”
The success of “Greenleaf” along with Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and the Have Nots” gave OWN its highest monthly primetime rank in network history in August (#12) among women 25-54. The show is was created by Craig Wright, and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate Television. Clement Virgo also serves as an executive producer and director.
