Houston Teen (Ellis Hamilton) Wins $25,000 for World-Class Saxophone Compositions (WATCH)

*Reno, NV – Ellis Hamilton will receive a $25,000 Davidson Fellows scholarship on Wednesday in Washington D.C. for his music portfolio, The Music in Me. Hamilton is just one of 20 students across the country who will be recognized by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development for his incredible work.

“I am incredibly humbled to receive this Davidson Fellows award because it means that my work is being recognized by a prestigious organization,” said Hamilton. “It is truly an honor to have my music recognized in such a significant way.”

For his project, Hamilton submitted a portfolio of original compositions and arrangements. The first rendition of his portfolio was produced as a one-man show when he was just 13-years-old.

It wasn’t until meeting his mentor, legendary smooth jazz saxophonist and flautist Najee, that Hamilton had the opportunity to play a piece with a full ensemble band on stage at a jazz club in Washington, DC. Later, he organized a show full of musicians from his high school and performed live.

In addition to playing a wide array of instruments, including drums, piano, clarinet, saxophone, and bass guitar, Hamilton is an aspiring filmmaker and writer. He wrote, directed, edited, starred in, and scored his own original short film, and he has written a full-length novel.

Hamilton will attend Berklee College of Music as a freshman this fall where he will pursue a dual major in performance and film scoring.

“We are thrilled to recognize the 2016 Davidson Fellows not only for their incredible projects, but also for the journey they forged to reach this point,” said Bob Davidson, founder of the Davidson Institute. “Every year I am amazed by the depth of the Fellows’ accomplishments. Through encouragement and recognition, the Davidson Institute for Talent Development anticipates that gifted students like these will be among the pioneers who will solve the world’s most vexing problems.”

The 2016 Davidson Fellows will be honored at a reception in Washington, D.C., on September 21.
The Davidson Fellows Scholarship program offers $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships to students 18 or younger, who have completed significant projects that have the potential to benefit society in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature and music.

The Davidson Fellows Scholarship has provided more than $6.7 million in scholarship funds to 286 students since its inception in 2001, and has been named one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships by U.S. News & World Report. It is a program of the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Reno, Nev. that supports profoundly gifted youth.
