*Mykelti Williamson is set for a recurring role ABC’s new drama “Designated Survivor,” joining his former “24” co-star Kiefer Sutherland in the series from The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios.

Sutherland stars as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member, who unexpectedly becomes President after a devastating attack on Washington. He will struggle to prevent the country and his own family from falling into chaos, as he is thrust into one of the most difficult presidencies in history.

Williamson will play Admiral Chernow, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a forthright and intelligent career military man who quickly becomes one of President Kirkman’s most trusted advisors, according to Deadline.com.

Williamson appeared in season eight of Fox’s “24” as Brian Hastings, Director of CTU New York. He previously recurred on WGN America’s “Underground” as Moses, the fiery one-eyed preacher for the plantation’s field hands who must decide if God himself would want him and his family to risk it all by trying to escape. He also starred in FX’s “Justified.”

Williamson co-stars in Denzel Washington’s upcoming film adaptation of “Fences,” which is already generating award season buzz. Williamson will play Gabriel Maxson in the film version and also starred opposite Washington in the recent Broadway revival of the play, which ended up winning Tonys for the two leads, Washington and Viola Davis. Scott Rudin and Todd Black are producing the movie with Washington for Paramount Pictures.

“Designated Survivor” premieres September 21 at 10 PM on ABC.
