*A film that delves into the origins and cultural impact of twerking will back into theaters this December from startup studio Supergravity, reports Variety.

Italian filmmaker Spaghetto’s film “Twerkumentary” also seeks to explore the “deeper conversation about empowerment, freedom of expression and the influence that music and the Internet have on cultures around the world.”

The film features interviews and dance from Big Freedia, Diplo, E40, George Clinton, Ham on Everything, Khia, Kreayshawn, Mike G, Too Short and DJ Jubilee.

“Making this documentary has been a long and interesting journey that took me all over the world,” Spaghetto said. “It started because I wanted people to understand more about the origins of the dance and I also wanted to explore some of the topics that its pop evolution generated; cultural appropriation, feminism, freedom of expression, social media and trends.

“With this idea in mind, the film incorporates a lot of different elements from the roots of twerk in the Paleolithic time to the creation of the hashtag, to Tokyo’s Kawaii way of twerking, to New Orleans’ originators, to a new sex toy called Twerking Butt and everything in between. I’m very excited about partnering with Supergravity and to finally share my film with the world!”

Supergravity founder Marc Hustvedt told Variety, “This filmed jumped out at us immediately as the kind of film we had to release. It brilliantly captures the modern reality we all inhabit where an artifact of an obscure subculture can take over the world through the social internet.”

Supergravity is in preproduction on “Rock Steady Row,” directed by Trevor Stevens, and in post-production on a Ray William Johnson documentary feature reports Variety. The company was founded in 2014; investors include Van Toffler’s Gunpowder & Sky, backed by Otter Media, the digital-video joint venture of Chernin Group and AT&T.
