*Laurence Fishburne, Steve Carell and Bryan Cranston and said to be circling Richard Linklater’s next movie, “Last Flag Flying,” a sequel of sorts to the 1973 comedy-drama “The Last Detail,” about two members of the Navy showing a third a good time while escorting him to prison for a petty crime.
“The Last Detail,” starring Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid and Otis Young, was nominated for three Oscars and Nicholson won a BAFTA for the role. It was based on Darryl Ponicsan’s 1970 landmark novel. “The Last Flag” was its sequel, published in 2005.
Linklater first mentioned a desire to adapt “The Last Flag” into a film back in 2006, hoping to reunite Nicholson and Quaid, with Morgan Freeman taking on the part played by Young, who had passed away in 2001.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film, titled “Last Flag Flying,” is now a go at Amazon Studios, with Fishburne eyed to step into Young’s shoes. The setting is post-9/11 and the former Naval petty officers come to the aid of their former prisoner, who needs their help to bring home the body of his son who was killed in Iraq.
The request sends them back retracing their journey from Norfolk, Virginia, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Production is set to start in November.
Fishburne, currently starring on ABC’s “Black-ish,” was most recently seen in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and has “Passengers” with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence and “John Wick: Chapter Two” in the pipeline.
