*The African American man shot by Indianapolis police after making a 911 call to report a robbery is out of the hospital and recuperating at home, according to the law firm now representing him.
Carl Williams, 48, is not ready to meet with the press but his law firm, Ramey & Haley, is planning a 2 p.m. news conference today (Aug. 26) at the New Beginnings Fellowship Church, according to a statement reported by IndyStar.com.
Williams, a postal worker with eight years in the military, had celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary just three days before his wife was confronted by a would-be carjacker outside their east-side home early Tuesday.
Williams’ wife managed to escape inside of the house, and Williams called 911. An edited audio recording of the call, released publicly on Tuesday, captured the sounds of Williams comforting his crying wife. It also caught his remark, “Is that him?” just before the line went dead.
Moments later, Williams emerged from his garage with a handgun. IMPD officer Christopher Mills, a nine-year veteran who responded to the call, fired a shot that hit Williams in the abdomen.
After the shooting, Williams was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious condition.
Police acknowledged Tuesday that the incident was a mistake.
