*Headed to New York and Los Angeles theaters August 26th through September 8th is the film “Black Women in Medicine.”

While women have taken up leadership roles in national movements and are heading up Fortune 500 companies, the film “Black Women in Medicine” shows the extraordinary lengths to which women will go to reach their dreams despite all odds.

Crystal Emery, the film’s director, is a phenomenon who has never let the fact that she is a quadriplegic stop her. She has inspired many to challenge the limitations they may whether it be filmmaker, playwright, writer, producer or activist. “Black Women in Medicine” is Emery’s second documentary.

Emery recently launched, with former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders—who is also a subject of the film as well as Dr. Ben Carson—a national initiative called “Changing the Face of Medicine.” The effort is designed to increase the number of black doctors from 4% to 7% by the year 2030.

“Black Women in Medicine” explores the history, contemporary issues and future possibilities of African American women physicians through the diverse voices of young medical students, practicing physicians, and elder trailblazers such as Elders, on what it means to be a black female doctor in America.

The groundbreaking film includes rarely seen documentation of black women practicing medicine during critical operations, emergency room urgent care, community wellness sessions, and in-depth interviews. In telling the stories of women who have overcome barriers related to race and gender, “Black Women in Medicine” celebrates the triumph of the human spirit.

The film will be in New York at the Cinema Village theater (www.cinemavillage.com ), August 26 through September 1, and in Los Angeles at the Laemmle theater (www.laemmle.com) September 2nd through 8th.
