Conflicted: NewsNow Panel Discusses Supporting Nate Parker in Light of Past Rape Charges (WATCH)

*WASHINGTON, D.C.  –  Today on TV One’s News One Now, Host and Managing Editor Roland S. Martin spoke about actor and film director Nate Parker’s resurfacing rape case and its effect on his upcoming film “The Birth of a Nation.”

During the conversation, leadership strategist Dr. Jones-DeWeever talked about how she is internally torn between supporting the story of Nat Turner that needs to be told in America or boycotting Parker’s film due to his past rape case.

“I was shocked, I was hurt, and I was devastated and disappointed because I think this piece of art needs to be out there,” said Dr. Jones-DeWeever.”I think that the world needs to know about Nat Turner and needs to know about this rebellion and I was greatly looking forward to this movie. I’m not at the point now where I can say I don’t think people need to support it, per se, because I think the world needs to know that history; I think we need to be enlightened in that way, but I also think that we need to understand and have real discussions in this country about rape culture and what that means and have real discussions with our sons about consent and what that does and doesn’t mean. When people have violated a woman, they have to understand it’s not all about them. It’s about the woman that was violated, a life that was destroyed, and how do you move forward without at least acknowledging the pain that was brought on this woman which her family said she never recovered from.”

Roland S. Martin, host and managing editor of TV One’s News One Now, is available as political analyst and commentator for upcoming live broadcasts and news programs leading up to the General Election.
