*Former NFL star Darren Sharper was ordered to serve a prison sentence of more than 18 years following his guilty pleas regarding his plot to drug women in order to facilitate rape, a federal judge in New Orleans ruled Thursday.

According to The New Orleans Advocate, U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo handed down the punishment for Sharper, 41, six months after she rejected an earlier agreement that would have sent the former safety to prison for nine years.

The higher sentence fell within the range of 15 to 19 years that a federal probation report recommended, based in part on the sheer number of victims — 16 — who came forward with charged and uncharged allegations against Sharper.

Sharper, shackled and wearing an orange prisoner’s jumpsuit, on Thursday said he apologized to his victims “1,000 times,” reports USA Today.

“They didn’t deserve anything being a part of my heinous decisions,” he said sobbing. “I still don’t know why I lived my life right for 38 years, and then I took this path.”
