Mike Brown March in Ferguson Interrupted by Gunfire (Video)

Streaming

*Unfortunately at protest march marking the second anniversary of killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white Ferguson, Missouri police officer, gunfire was reported.

It happened after a police officer ordered a small group of protesters to clear the street as they marched downtown from the site of Brown’s shooting on Aug. 9, 2014, according to the Associate Press.

Jeff Small, a spokesman for the city, told NBC News that police responded to reports of gunfire and of a pedestrian’s having been struck by a car.

Several journalists covering the march reported the same thing in social media posts from the scene (scroll down to see their tweets).

The situation had been peaceful during observances earlier in the day as prominent members of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Michael Brown Chosen for Change charitable foundation organized a vigil with music and poetry readings.

In 2014, Brown’s killing by Officer Darren Wilson, led to weeks of sometimes-violent protests. Wilson, who resigned, was cleared by a state grand jury and the U.S. Justice Department, but the shooting led to a consent decree governing the Ferguson Police Department.

Antonio French, a St. Louis city alderman who emerged as a prominent spokesman for peaceful protesters in Ferguson, said Brown’s death had not yet brought sufficient reform to what he called an unequal criminal justice system.

French told NBC News that as long as police officers carried on being “unaccountable for their actions,” deep mistrust would remain between police and their communities.

“There are Fergusons everywhere,” French said. “There are many powder kegs all across America that could explode at any minute.”
