Gabby Douglas Responds to Backlash Over National Anthem Behavior

*Gabby Douglas barely had time to enjoy her third gold medal at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday before being hit with a social media backlash.

The Olympic gymnast has responded to critics who accused her of being disrespectful to America for being the only member of the team’s “Final Five” who didn’t place a hand over her heart as the national anthem played during Tuesday’s medal ceremony.

A lot of the Twitter backlash looked like this:

But one man’s opinion of disrespect was another man’s opinion of solidarity to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, as Tuesday was the anniversary of Michael Brown’s killing by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo.

Douglas responded to the controversy with an apology Wednesday morning.

“First I want to say thank you everyone for all your support!! It’s a huge honor for me to be able to represent #TeamUSA,” she wrote. “In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always try to stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played. I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone.

  1. I wish so-called “Patriots” would be this disturbed over the domestic terrorists murdering black people under the color of authority in AmeriKKKa. (AKA, KKKops).

All of you delusional, racist white swines can kiss Gabrielle’s beautiful black ass.

You simple minded MFers are outraged over her NOT bowing down to an inanimate object?

Please hurry up and go f-ck yourselves with as many flagpoles that you can cram up your stank asses. Whiny, envious, inferior, sub-human, demons.

Racist white people are so f-cking crazy. Eat sh-t and die MFers…

  2. Love you and Simone, Gabrielle! Pay no attention to the haters!

And yeah, I cited the sisters, because unlike the others, I know the incredible amount of pressure, and scrutiny these fabulous black young ladies are under. If you don’t like what I’m saying, tell it to your inbred mother, because IDGAF.

Work that black girl magic ladies! 10,000 standing ovations to you two! SALUTE!

  3. If memory serves me correctly, you place your hand over your heart when you’re reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag NOT when you hear the National Anthem. Folks need to calm the hell down!

  4. If memory serves me correctly, placing one’s hand over one’s heart is OPTIONAL. Ask the Mennonites, and those of other religious affiliations…

Since that option applies to them, then it certainly applies to any other red blooded American.

    Newsflash: That includes African-Americans, too.

Please STFU. You’re attempt to “sound authoritative” on this subject only exposed your ignorance. Please calm that down, you idiot, wrong wing, nut job.

Please spend more time trying to convince white racists to stop their BS, instead of trying to lecture African-Americans about a BS “tradition.”

GTFOH creep, and celebrate that black girl magic that you racist butt holes hate. Learn to do that. F-ck that flag.

Salute to Gabrielle, and Simone! 🙂
