The 22-year-old, charged in the June 17, 2015 killing of nine black worshippers at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church, was assaulted by a fellow inmate this morning as he prepared to take a shower, according to the Post and Courier.

Roof was not seriously injured and was medically evaluated at the Cannon Detention Center following the 7:45 a.m. incident, said Maj. Eric Watson, of the Sheriff’s Office.

Dwayne Marion Stafford, 25, of Goose Creek, allegedly exited his locked room and ran downstairs to the first level of the jail where Roof was preparing to shower. Stafford began assaulting him with his hands, according to an incident report. Roof was hit in the face and body and suffered bruising to his face and back. No weapons were involved. Detention officers broke up the altercation. The assault was “unprovoked,” according to the report.

Authorities earlier said Stafford would be charged with third-degree assault and battery, a misdemeanor, but Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said during a press conference that Roof and his attorneys do not plan to pursue charges.

According to jail records, Roof is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds, while Stafford is 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 144 pounds. Stafford was jailed on charges of strong-arm robbery, first-degree assault and battery and providing false information to a police officer. Those cases are pending.

Folks on social media are praising Stafford for the assault, with some asking whether a GoFundMe account has been created on his behalf and where they can put money on his commissary. Others refer to him as a hero and call for him to receive a reduced sentence.
