Dylann Roof’s Lawyer Seeks to Leave Evidence Out of Church Shooting Trial

*A lawyer for Dylann Roof, the man charged in the Charleston church shootings, wants a judge to keep some video and other evidence out of his federal hate crimes trial, and says explaining why in public could harm prospects of seating an impartial jury.

The government is seeking the death penalty for Roof, who is accused of gunning down nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church.

According to The AP, Assistant U.S. Public Defender Sarah Gannett says the evidence she wants blocked includes videos, transcripts and other documents affecting Roof’s constitutional rights to be free from unreasonable searches and self-incrimination.

In Wednesday’s court filing, she asks to be allowed to file the motion supporting her request under seal, because she says making it public could affect the ability to have a fair trial.
