*After Tracy Morgan’s near-death experience in 2014, the doctor’s told him that he might never be funny again.

But after recovering from his near death experience, Morgan says that he feels funnier than ever, with a new passion for life. After a triumphant return to Saturday Night Live as host in October 2015, Morgan recently received his second ever Emmy nomination in the category Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly after his nomination, Morgan said that he feels like Cuba Gooding Jr. at the end of Jerry Maguire, and thanked everyone who helped him recover from the fatal truck accident that left him in critical condition. The comedian said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly:

“I am just so happy and want to share this with so many people and am nominated with some extraordinary company. I love you guys.

“I just want to thank everyone who helped me and my family after that horrific night and the months after,” he went on. “Lorne [Michaels] and everyone at SNL for having me come home. The doctors at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital who saved my life. The staff at JFK Medical Center who got me back on my feet. The first responders who helped me and my friends that fateful night. My amazing wife and kids. Lira, who helped my wife. My father, who is looking down on me right now.”

Morgan and his friends were in a limo when they were struck by an 18-wheeler driven by a fatigued Wal-Mart driver. Morgan suffered serious brain injuries, a devastating accident for anyone, but especially for a comedian who relies on his brain to make people laugh. Today, trucking accident experts estimate that one in five accidents involving large trucks and busses are caused by driver fatigue, and more than 1,500 people die in these accidents every year.

Morgan also dedicated his Emmy nomination to his friend Jimmy Mack. And like any good comedian, he ultimately used that fateful night to make his comedy stronger.

Here’s Morgan talking about the crash during his SNL monologue last October:

“I was in a terrible car accident more than a year ago. It was awful, but it also showed me how much love and support I have in this world…People are wondering, ‘Can he speak? Does he have 100 percent mental capacity?’ The truth is, I never did. I might even be a few points higher.”
