*Paramount will give an awards season push to its adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Fences.”
The film, directed by, and starring Denzel Washington opposite Viola Davis, will hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on December 16, and open nationwide on Christmas Day.
Both actors won Tonys for their performance in the 2010 Broadway revival of “Fences,” which was first performed in 1985.
The story follows a one-time promising baseball player, now working as a Pittsburgh garbage collector, and the complicated relationships with his wife, son and friends. The film’s ensemble cast includes Stephen Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, Jovan Adepo and Saniyya Sidney.
“Fences” is Washington’s third outing behind the camera following “The Great Debaters” and “Antwone Fisher.”
