*Today on News One Now, Host and Managing Editor Roland S. Martin spoke with members of Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Board about his recent questioning of Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton’s religion.
Sr. Pastor Bishop Harry Jackson of Hope Christian Church, Pastor A.R. Bernard of the Christian Cultural Center, and Pastor Mark Burns of the NOW Network do not endorse Trump’s campaign for presidency, but each believes it is their duty to have an influence on shaping Trump’s economic stability plan for African Americans.
“What we are trying to do is to give him [Trump] a framework for values and to bring a contribution that can help African American people, especially, and people at the kinda bottom rung of the culture, get a chance in life,” said Bishop Jackson. ”That’s really our focus from a faith perspective to say can you do something about justice as it’s needed out in America for Black people? Can you make a difference in the outworking of faith centered values?”
Martin agreed that we need to influence presidential candidates to better the Black community, but disagreed with the pastor’s position on assisting a candidate who has constantly criticized other political figure’s religious values when his own are in constant question.
“If you are going to stand there in front of evangelicals and question Hillary Clinton’s faith and President Obama’s faith then we get to examine your [Trump] faith,” said Martin. “And as a Christian leader, I would have said ‘excuse me,” you don’t have the right to question somebody else’s faith and then dance around it. That’s what he [Trump] did,” said Martin.
“When you are a pastor, when you are a religious leader, again, you have the job of the prophetic to speak truth to power,” added Martin. “It was one of the prophets who told David you were wrong when you slept with Bathsheba. What I’m saying is that I don’t believe you sit there and you do a dance with the politician. You gotta be able to say; here you’re right, and here you’re wrong.”
