Foxx, who has been in the entertainment industry for more than 40 years, recalled the many episodes of his career and the zillions of people that he was both met and worked with over the years.
Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Foxx talked about how he grew up with Motown  Records artists, “Smokey” Robinson, The Supremes and others as they all went to the same high school at the same time.
He says that he got the idea of getting into entertainment from watching the Motown artists, but seeing actor Sidney Poitier in the 1955 hit, “Blackboard Jungle,” really convinced him.
Foxx remembers his first job as an actor was in New York City, where he met the most talented and popular actors of the day.
After six years in the “Big Apple,” and gaining experience, he moved to Seattle, WA. From there he moved to Los Angeles, where he took training from C. Bernard Jackson at the Inner City Cultural Center.
He later formed the Foxx Follies Theatre Workshop, where he trained many young actors. Foxx’s first film he did as an actor was “Disco 9000,” in 1977. He followed it with “Corner Boy” in 1978.
In 1980, he got a role as “Pretty Red” with Leon Issac Kennedy in director Jamaa Fanaka’s urban film, “Penitentiary.” The film gained fame after appearing in the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. Foxx will tell you that he has a special love for the theatre.
In 2014, he wrote, produced and directed the play “Livin’ Fat” during a summer theater festival. The following year, he wrote, produced and directed the play “Power Play.”
Other projects that he’s done included “The Club” with actor Thomas Mikal Ford.
Foxx says a recent trip to Africa showed him where the slaves embarked from Africa to the U.S., never to return again. This made a profound impact on him, one that he says he’ll never forget.
Estelle stated that she started the “Honor Thy Father” Awards Dinner after having to grow up without a father.
For the past 15 years, she has worked hard to get funding for this event where the honored fathers get recognition.
She talks about the shortage of fathers in the black community, noting that a child needs both parents to be raised.
This year the 15th annual event will be held on Sunday, June 19th at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles-Westside, 6161 W. Centinela Avenue, Culver City, CA 90230 [310-649-1776]
The Red Carpet will be at 2PM and the Dinner Program begins at 3PM.
Estelle says Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr. will be the keynote speaker. He will be accompanied by his two sons.
