*Before Kerry Washington became the face of Shondaland on Thursday nights, the actress was cast – and fired from two shows, saying she wasn’t “urban” enough to pull off the roles.

In an interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” video series, Kerry Washington told Aziz Ansari that her road to Shondaland was paved with two firings from other shows, because Washington didn’t fit a particular “urban” bill.

“Before ‘Scandal,’ I was actually cast in two other pilots. Both went to series, but I was fired and recast,” Washington told Ansari. “For both, it was because they wanted me to sound more ‘girlfriend,’ more like ‘hood,’ more ‘urban.’”

Kerry said the Hollywood shuffle doesn’t just involve racial stereotypes.

“I’ve had friends of mine say like they’re tired of ‘gayface’ and I was like, ‘What’s gayface?’ They were like, ‘It’s the gay version of blackface, like come in and be more effeminate,”‘ Washington said, recounting past conversations.
