Roland Martin (NewsOne Now): Atlanta’s HIV/AIDS Epidemic Equivalent to 3rd World Countries

roland martin (newsone now)

*WASHINGTON, D.C. –  NewsOne Now, host and managing editor Roland S. Martin spoke with a panel of experts about HIV/AIDS in the Black community. As a result of a recent Emory University Center for AIDS Research study, which shows the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Atlanta is equivalent to that of Third World African countries, Martin questioned the role and involvement of Black Organizations to educate and help prevent the spread of the disease.

Although Martin agrees HIV/AIDS is a massive epidemic and the effects are devastating to the black community, he asked the panel, “Who’s marching?  Who’s protesting? Who’s pushing them and emailing them? Where is the campaign and mobilization to put pressure to move people to action?”

Behavioral scientist Cleo Manago, one of today’s panelists, raised a valuable point: “The community itself is not alarmed, which comes from Black men internalizing the implication that they’re not valuable.”

In addition to Manago, today’s panelists also included: Leadership Strategist Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever; SisterLove Executive Director Dazon Dixon Diallo; Primary Care Physician Dr. David Malebranche; Color of Change Executive Director Rashad Robinson; HIV Advocate Devin Barrington-Ward; and Center for Black Equity President Earl D. Fowlkes, Jr.
