Bono, lead singer of the rock band U2 and co-founder of ONE, a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization, testifies while flanked by Kelly Clements,(L), deputy high commissioner in the United Nations Officer for Refugees, during a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill, April 12, 2016 in Washington, DC.

*Bono was brought in to testify before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Tuesday to discuss what role foreign aid should play in stopping violent extremism.

His answer – U.S. humor.

“I think comedy should be deployed,” he said, before comparing ISIS to “show businesses,” and suggesting Chris Rock and other comedians would have a unique way of disarming the terrorists.

“The first people that Adolf Hitler threw out of Germany were the Dadaists and surrealists. You speak violence. You speak their language. But you laugh at them when they’re goose-stepping down the street, and it takes away their power,” Bono said. “So I’m suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen. Thank you.”

Bono had to preface his answer with, “don’t laugh,” which, of course, drew laughter. But he was quite serious.

The U2 frontman is co-founder of the ONE campaign, an anti-poverty organization. He reportedly visited refugee camps in Kenya, Jordan and Turkey earlier this month.
