*The 1995 romantic comedy “Waiting to Exhale” was adapted from the novel of the same name by Terry McMillan, and marked actor Forest Whitaker’s directorial debut.

The film starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, Loretta Devine, Dennis Haysbert, Michael Beach, Gregory Hines, Donald Faison, and Mykelti Williamson.

The story centers on the dynamic of four African American female friends living in the Arizona area, and their relationships with men. The Los Angeles Times called it a “social phenomenon.”

The film earned over $81 million against a $16 million budget, and fans have been curious about a big screen follow-up. Loretta chatted to “Hollywood Today LIVE” about a possible sequel for “Waiting To Exhale.” Below are highlights from the interview.

ON A POSSIBLE SEQUEL FOR “WAITING TO EXHALE”

“They’re still writing on it.”

“Well everything happened so quick because Gregory [Hines] passed and then Whitney [Houston] passed. It’s like, you can’t start a movie with two funerals, and so they were like the key characters, and so everything just sort- of got scattered after that. But I think Terry McMillan is still trying to make it happen, I don’t know if it’s that easy.

ON THE ORIGINAL CAST COMING BACK FOR A SEQUEL:

“Oh God everybody’s on board!”

ON WHITNEY HOUSTON’S DESIRE TO GET HER LIFE TOGETHER FOR THE SEQUEL:

“Whitney was even like, the last time I talked to her, she was like, ‘Oh God, I can’t wait, I’m gunna get myself together to do this. And it just didn’t happen.”

ON WHO WOULD PLAY WHITNEY’S ROLE IN A SEQUEL:

“We have so much new, young great talent so it would be limitless girls.”
