*TMZ is reporting that comedian Garry Shandling, who got his start in Hollywood as a writer for “Sanford and Son,” has died at the age of 66.

According to the report, Shandling was not suffering from any illness when he passed away at an L.A. area hospital on Thursday. A source connected to the comic says he was healthy and speaking to people on Thursday morning.

A TMZ source says there was a 911 call from “The Larry Sanders Show” star’s home, and he was transported to the hospital. He was reportedly alive when he arrived at the hospital.

In addition to “Sanford and Son,” Shandling also wrote for “Welcome Back, Kotter” early in his career. In 1986, he received his first cable show, “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.”

This was followed by Shandling’s groundbreaking HBO late-night parody “The Larry Sanders Show.” In the years since Larry Sanders went off the air, Shandler acted intermittently in movies, starring in “What Planet Are You From?” and “Town & Country,” and playing a corrupt senator in Marvel films.
