*Can WE tv’s new reality series “Sisters In Law” raise the bar for the genre’s depiction of black women?

It has the potential to do so, based on the first episode (Thursday, March 24 at 10 p.m.), which introduces viewers to the six featured attorneys and their very different personalities.

We follow the ladies on the job, in their homes and amongst each other – the latter providing plenty of tune-in drama without ever crossing into ratchetness. However, voices will be raised and shade will be thrown before the hour is over.

“We get mad and we fuss, but we have boundaries,” noted cast member and criminal attorney Monique Sparks. “I think we’ll respect each other’s boundaries. We’re all professional women and we want to see each other succeed. I don’t think any of us has the goal to tear anyone else down.”

The “Sisters In Law” circle is comprised of several decades-long friendships, several mentor/mentee relationships and a past business partnership that went sour, the residue of which spills into the first episode.

It was cast member Juanita Jackson’s idea to create the series. The public defender began visualizing the concept and came up with the name years ago, but didn’t know anyone in the business…until actress Kim Coles began dating one of her friends.

It also becomes apparent in the first episode that a rivalry exists between civil attorneys and defense attorneys. This beef plays out the most between cast members Rhonda Wills, a civil attorney who specializes in class action lawsuits and playfully flaunting her wealth; and Jolanda Jones, a self-described “warrior lawyer” from Houston’s 3rd Ward, driven to provide justice for poor defendants.

Rounding out the cast is Vivian King, the second black female in Texas to become board certified in criminal law and matriarch of the group; and Tiye Foley, the lone African American attorney at her prestigious firm (male or female).

“Sisters In Law” premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. on WE tv.
