DuVernay to ‘Battle of Versailles’; ‘Batman v. Superman’ Stars on Metro

ava-duvernay*Ava DuVernay is jumping into the world of fashion with her next film.

Deadline reports the writer-director  is aligning with HBO to co-write and direct “The Battle of Versailles,” a movie that centers on the fashion show that broke racial barriers and put American designers and black models on the map. The film will be an adaptation of fashion journalist Robin Givhan’s book “The Battle Of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into The Spotlight And Made History.”

In addition to co-writing and directing the film, DuVernay will serve as an executive producer on the project.

Historically speaking, the 1973 Palace of Versailles fashion show was a fundraiser for the restoration of King Louis XIV’s palace. The event is noted for pitting French designers Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro and Marck Bohan of Christian Dior against then-unknown American designers Oscar de la Renta, Anne Klein, Donna Karan (then Klein’s assistant), Stephen Burrows, Bill Blass and Halson against each other in front of a crowd comprised of the social elite.

Despite kicking things off with an extravagant two-hour production with a live classical orchestra, the French designers came up short as the American designers won the competition with a 35-minute showcase with an Eiffel Tower backdrop and a pre-recorded Al Green track playing in the background.

Noting the victory, Deadline pointed out that the energy of the Americans’ fashion show contributed to the win, in addition to the groundbreaking presence of African Americans, who made up 10 of the 30 models in the fashion show.

As DuVernay works to bring another historical moment to the masses, the stars of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” are weighing in on burning question: Who does Young Metro trust?

The question has become a hot topic in light of the viral nature of hilarious memes from music super producer Metro Boomin’s tagline “If Young Metro Don’t Trust You I’m Gon’ Shoot You!”

Taking its cue from the title of the highly anticipated movie, HipHollywood posed the question to the “Batman v. Superman” cast members Ben Affleck and Laurence Fishburne regarding who they thought Metro would trust if he had to choose between Batman and Superman.
