D.L. Hughley on Trump’s Claims to Pay Supporter’s Legal Fees

d.l. hugley*Donald Trump’s boast of paying the legal fees of his out-of hand supporters is bringing a slew of opposition from those who’ve had it with the GOP presidential front-runner, his controversial style of campaigning and his encouragement of violent behavior at his rallies.

Among those voicing their dislike of Trump’s plan to pay his supporter’s legal fees is D.L. Hughley, who took to social media to weigh in on the situation in a video.

“This isn’t the new America, it’s the old one,” the comedian stated on Facebook. “This nation was founded on bigotry/hate and it seems anxious to go back there”

Hughley’s comments come after Trump revealed Sunday that he is looking into paying the legal fees of John McGraw. The 78-year-old Trump supporter generated attention and headlines after he sucker-punched Rakeem Jones, a 26-year-old black protester, at a campaign rally last week in North Carolina, according to the New York Daily News.

Footage of the incident captures a cowboy hat-wearing McGraw suddenly standing up and taking a swing at Jones’ face as police pulled the protester up a staircase. After striking the blow, McGraw sits down as those sitting nearby shower him with cheers.

McGraw was arrested for the incident and charged with assault the next day.

Commenting on what McGraw did and his legal fees, Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would look into providing financial support.

“I’ve actually instructed my people to look into it, yes,” he said Sunday while defending McGraw. “The man got carried away. He was 78 years old, he obviously loves his country, and maybe he doesn’t like seeing what’s happening to the country.”

With Jones, Trump stated that he might have had it coming in light of him flipping his finger at the officers who booted him out of the rally.

“He was very taunting. He was very loud, very disruptive,” Trump said about Jones. “And from what I understand, he was sticking a certain finger up in the air. That is a terrible thing to do in front of somebody that frankly wants to see America made great again.”

The incident in North Carolina is among a string of occurrences that have taken place at Trump rallies around the country. Despite claiming that his events are peaceful, it’s been noted that Trump has constantly encouraged his supporters to engage in violence towards protestors by promising to pay for any legal troubles they cause.

The situation with McGraw marks the first time Trump has stated that he might directly pay the legal fees for one of his supporters.

Things came to ahead last week when the secret service flew into action when a protester nearly stormed the stage to get at Trump in Dayton, Ohio and violence erupted in St. Louis and Kansas City. As a result, Trump cancelled a rally in Chicago for fear of more clashes.
