*‘RACE” star Stephan James has been cast alongside Sanaa Lathan in the new FOX event TV series, “Shots Fired.”

Created and developed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Beyond the Lights,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Love & Basketball”) and Reggie Rock Bythewood (“Beyond the Lights,” “Notorious”), the drama examines the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town in Tennessee, per Coming Soon.

An earlier description of the series said the shooting involves an African-American cop killing a white teen.

Lathan plays an expert investigator who immerses herself into the cases, alongside a special prosecutor (James) sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair is on a mission to bring justice to light before city unrest turns divisive.

“Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” said David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.”

The Bythewoods wrote the story – with Gina directing – and they are exec producing along with Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. The project is inspired by the wave of overzealous law officials using deadly force in black neighborhoods.

In addition to “Race,” James was featured in Ava DuVernay‘s critically acclaimed feature “Selma.” He received a Black Reel Award nomination for Breakthrough Performance, and shared with his fellow actors the Black Film Critics Circle Award for Best Ensemble.

“Shots Fired” is set to debut in 2016.
