The View’ Renewed, but Raven-Symone’s Future Uncertain

The View, Raven*ABC has renewed “The View” for its 20th season, and Variety reports that Candi Carter has been hired as the show’s first African American executive producer.

She spent 15 years as a supervising producer at ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ and has produced for BET.  Carter served as the interim showrunner on ‘The View’, working alongside veteran producers to help revamp the series, which has struggled since creator Barbara Walters retired in May 2013.

Season 18 saw viewership drop after Rosie O’Donnell departed. Season 19 attempted to generate buzz with its panel of Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Candace Cameron-Bure, Paula Faris, Michelle Collins and Raven-Symone. Season 20 is expected to return in the fall, but it’s unclear which panelists will be returning along with it, including Raven-Symone, whose future with the show has been in question for several weeks. It’s rumored that she has been fired from the show, following a storm of criticism that she has endured over her fearless opinion on controversial topics.

Goldberg’s contract is up this year and many of the co-hosts signed one year contracts that may or may not be extended.

via Deadline:

Many of their contracts are up this year, including Goldberg’s. Most of the freshman panelists nabbed one-year pacts after a roller coaster 18th season that saw Rosie O’Donnell exit less than six months after rejoining the show she’d previously appeared on the acrimonious, headline-grabbing 2006-07 season. Not long after her exit, The View shed new panelists Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace. This season’s panelists include returned Joy Behar, Candace Cameron Bure, Michelle Collins, Raven-Symoné and ABC News’s Paula Faris.

“This season ‘The View’ has once again been at the very heart of the political conversation and cultural conversation in America,” said James Goldston, the president of ABC News. “Candi and the team have worked tirelessly to make ‘The View’ the place to be heard for an impressive roster of celebrities, politicians and people in the news.”

Carter will assume the role as executive producer immediately.

“It’s an honor to be part of the extraordinary legacy built by Barbara Walters, the exceptional, funny and smart women at the table led by Whoopi Goldberg and a terrific team behind the scenes,” Carter said.
