Kamala Harris Being Considered to Replace Justice Antonin Scalia?

kamala harris*As the search for a replacement for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia continues, a new name has entered the fray..

Media sources are reporting that The New York Times and USA Today have mentioned California Attorney General Kamala Harris as among the people possibly President Barack Obama could nominate to succeed Scalia, who died in sleep on Saturday (Feb. 13).

If Harris were appointed to replace Scalia, she would be the first black female Supreme Court justice. As it stands now, Harris joins previously mentioned notables such as Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, whom Supreme Court analyst Tom Goldstein believes is the “most likely candidate” to replace Scalia. Like Harris, Booker’s name has come up in the Scalia replacement talk by the Times and USA Today.

As for Harris, she’s blazed her own trail prior to news of her being acknowledged as a possible replacement for Scalia. The 51-year-old, who announced her intention to run for the U.S. Senate last year, has already marked her place in history as the first African-American and first woman to be named California attorney general, a position she’s held since 2011.

In addition, Harris’ professional history includes serving as a deputy district attorney in California from 2000 to 2011 and being elected district attorney of San Francisco twice.
