Will Smith Calls Son Jayden ‘Fearless’ for Rockin’ Women’s Clothes

Jayden*Will Smith tells PEOPLE that he has a hands off approach when it comes to parenting, so he isn’t all that bothered by his teen son Jaden Smith rocking women’s clothing. During an interview with disc jockey A.Dot for BBC Radio 1Xtra, Will explained that he and wife Jada Pinkett have always encouraged their kids to have freedom of expression.

“We may have gone too far,” he joked. “There’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage. You got to get out on the edge. You have to try things. You have to be comfortable doing things that people don’t agree with and you have to be comfortable doing things that you can fail.”

A.Dot followed up by asking Smith, “How do you respond then, for example, if you encourage them to have freedom of expression and then people will start making jokes about say Jaden modeling women’s clothes. How do you – as a dad – handle that?”

“Jaden is 100% fearless, he will do anything,” he added emphatically. “So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying – but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”

Jaden was recently named the new face of Louis Vuitton womenswear, and lately has been criticized for his feminine fashion decisions. “I feel like it’s an honor, actually, for people to think I’m crazy,” the 17-year-old told GQ in October, explaining, “They thought Galileo was crazy, too, you know what I’m saying?”

Will admits that the “rules” differ slightly for his daughter Willow, saying that when Jaden goes out “he’s usually in a group of “6 or 7 dudes, so they have a small army when they go out, so their freedom is slightly different from Willow’s. Willow’s a 15-year-old girl. We try to have the same rules but it’s a different world, so we’ve been struggling with that.”

In related news, Smith was also recently asked about his former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air costar Janet Hubert and he said she was “brilliant,” despite the fact that the actress slammed him and wife over the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

  1. It is not that big of a concern that homosexual, bisexual, queer, transexual, or questioning teens wear oddball clothing. As long as they are not shooting or looting, the world will be OK.

  2. Smith must be so proud of his son. Another f-up spoiled rich kid who no sense of reality. No wonder the world hates America.

    • and how are you contributing to making it a better world? Thought so. There are far bigger problems in the world than someone ELSE’S sartorial choices #liveandletlive #cleanwaterinflint

  3. Fighting men and women are fearless. This clown is a joke. If our brave service people knew what they were protecting decades ago they would have surrendered.

  4. Will Smith has created a disaster. A son who will have identity problem for many year. Jaden has chosen a tough road. I know the challenge of wearing a dress during high school. And I struggled with obesity. My glasses were slapped off many times. Sad….
