Cam Newton – Bill Romanowski

*There’s no question that after a less than stellar performance during the Super Bowl, complete with a walkout at the post-game press conference after losing the big game, this has been the worst week ever for Cam Newton.

Needless to say, the haters have come out in full force on the Carolina Panthers quarterback, including former NFL player Bill Romanowski, who represented for the racists out there as the personification of why Newton considered himself being viewed differently because he is a Black QB.

Kicking Newton while he’s down, Romanowski put his two cents in on social media with calling the athlete, “Boy.”

“You’ll never last in the NFL with that attitude. The world doesn’t revolve around you, boy!” #CamNewton. Romanowski tweeted

For those that don’t know, or claim they don’t know, “boy” has been a word used for centuries by racist White men as a way to make Black men feel inferior. It was a way to dehumanize Black men who they considered to be unworthy of respect and basic civil rights.

During his time in the NFL, Romanowski’s controversial behavior was known among sports fans. Evidence can be found in him kicking running back, Larry Centers, in the head in 1995; spitting in the face of J.J. Stokes in 1997; and crushing the eye socket of his teammate, Marcus Williams, during a scrimmage in 2003.

As a result, many of the league’s black players accused Romanowski of racism when he played professionally. Despite the allegations, proving that Romanowski is a racist was hard, considering there were those who regarded him as an overly aggressive athlete.

Nevertheless, Romanowski has found himself back at the center of those arguments with his rant against Newton.

The ex-sports star ended up doing damage control over his tweet as he appeared on the “TMZ Sports” show on Monday (Feb. 8) to state that he honestly had no idea the term “boy” could be used as a racial slur. By the end of his interview, Romanowski, mentioned that he takes full responsibility for using the word and apologized to Newton from the bottom of his heart.
