*Lil Wayne’s camp is defending his appearance in a Super Bowl ad in which he is seen cooking burgers for America’s first president George Washington – who famously owned slaves.

The ad for Apartments.com features Jeff Goldblum and a gospel choir singing “Moving On Up,” the theme to “The Jeffersons,” as he is literally lifted from the street toward a “dee-luxe apartment in the sky.”

George and Weezy eventually appear — George Washington and Lil Wayne, that is.  Weezy (the rapper) is on the grill preparing food as the Founding Father stands close by, as if he’s waiting to be served.

The optics are not good, according to folks who have criticized the ad as racially insensitive. However, a source close to the rapper tells TMZ the spot is “meant to be funny and silly and not the least bit offensive.”

The source added it’s supposed to be comedy, and “people need to calm down.”
