Homeschooling Becomes the Choice for Black Families Who Want to Protect Kids from Institutional Racism

*Did you know that as many as  220,000 African American children are currently being home-schooled?

According to the National Home Education Research Institute Black families are doing what many white families have been doing for quite some time. But the reasons for the decision is different.

White families often cite religious differences or even political reasons for the home-schooling choice, Black families are doing it to protect their precious children from institutional racism.

    The ultimate goal should be for all black students to remove themselves from the public school system.

    Black students, especially boys, face much harsher discipline in public schools than other students, according to new data from the Department of Education.

    Although black students made up only 18 percent of those enrolled in the schools sampled, they accounted for 35 percent of those suspended once, 46 percent of those suspended more than once and 39 percent of all expulsions, according to the Civil Rights Data Collection’s.

    A so-called school-to-prison pipeline flows from school discipline that lands disproportionately on students with disabilities and students of color, according to a set of reports by 26 experts released on Thursday.

    African-American students and students with disabilities are suspended at “hugely disproportionate rates compared to white students,” said a report by the Discipline Disparities Research-to-Practice Collaborative, which includes experts from fields such as advocacy, policy, social science and law.
