Jada Pinkett Smith Responds Peacefully to Janet Hubert Diss Over Oscar Boycott

Janet-Hubert-Jada-Pinkett-Smith*For anyone thinking Jada Pinkett Smith is going to slam Janet Hubert for dissing her and her husband Will Smith for boycotting the Oscars, think again.

Entertainment Tonight” spoke with Pinkett Smith at LAX on Wednesday (01-20-16) to get her thoughts the video Hubert released that captured her criticizing the couple for their planned boycott. According to Pinkett Smith, there is a bigger purpose for taking a rain check on the Oscars than what Hubert or others think.

“Considering that Alabama had its highest recruitment for the KKK for Martin Luther King’s birthday, I hope that we as African Americans can find a way to get along and step together,” the 44-year-old “Gotham” star told ET. “Here’s the deal: This whole Oscars controversy isn’t really about the Oscars. Really, it’s my plea to ask our community, people of color, to take back our power so that we can use it in all sectors of our community, and right now, specifically with African American people, we have some very serious issues that we as a people have to move together on.”

Pinkett Smith’s response follows the release of Hubert’s video on Monday (01-18-16). In the clip, the former “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” star, who played Aunt Viv during the early years of the classic TV show, went in on Pinkett Smith for requesting other black actors to take a similar stand against the Academy.

“Here’s the other thing, for you to ask other actors to jeopardize their careers … You know damn well, you don’t do that,” Hubert said in the video. “They don’t care! I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people [who are doing this] … That is not the way life works, baby. It’s very suspect to me.”

Pinkett Smith’s remarks regarding Hubert’s video comes amid comments from other celebrities about Hollywood’s lack of diversity and the decision of some to join Pinkett Smith in protesting the lack of entertainers of color not receiving nominations for Oscars in the major acting categories for the second straight year. Among those not being in the audience for Hollywood’s biggest night is Spike Lee, who clarified his motivation for skipping the Oscars during an appearance on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday.

Rather than return Hubert’s fire with a harsh reply, Pinkett Smith advocated for them rising above the beef together as a unified community.

“I’m hoping that we can find ways to step together in this, instead of finding ways to fight each other,” the actress stated. “I got love for everybody.”
