Seattle Seahawks Fan Pens Open Letter to ‘Classless Cam Newton’

cam-newton*Cam Newton is on a serious high with a crazy winning regular season for his Carolina Panthers, but the quarterback’s post-season actions in the playoffs have riled a Seattle Seahawks fan.

In an open letter posted on the Facebook page of local news station KIRO 7 Seattle , the fan, who goes by the name of Sarah, slammed the star player for grabbing the Seahawks’ famed 12th man flag, balling it up and throwing it to the ground after after the Panthers’ 31-24 victory against the Seahawks on Sunday. With its win, Carolina advances in the playoffs to face the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC championship game this Sunday, Jan. 24.

Although she gave respect and acknowledged the Panthers’ victory, Newton’s takedown of the flag was something Sarah would not let slide, according to the Sporting News. So much so that she put a label beside Newton’s name at the end of the letter that sums up her view of him: “Classless”

Within her message, Sarah detailed the significance of the 12th man flag and its history of being a positive and unifying symbol for Seahawks fans.

“The 12th man is a community, a family, that regardless of winning stand behind our team and our community,” Sarah wrote in the message. “So you see Cam, disrespecting the 12th man flag isn’t just disrespecting our team, it is disrespecting the fans that back our team. A community that feeds and clothes the homeless, a community that raises funds for families in hard times, a community that helps a 3-year-old girl battle cancer, a community that has more grace and respect than you could imagine.”

Although Sarah noted the charitable efforts of Seattle QB Russell Wilson in her critique of Newton, the Sporting News pointed out that the Panthers player is just as giving with his time when it comes to his young fans.

“Props to Russell Wilson, who brightens many a child’s day. But c’mon, Sarah. Cam loves kids. He doesn’t just hand every touchdown ball to a child in the stands; he is, in part, considered a crown prince of the Charlotte community because of his charitable efforts,” the site expressed. “tearing down a sign isn’t a great look, but neither is misrepresentation. Cam is down with many causes — not just his own.”

Nevertheless, Sarah’s letter struck a chord as KIRO 7 Seattle not only praised her message, but also shared it online after she posted the note on its Facebook page.

Dear Mr. Newton,

I am a Seahawk fan, I bleed blue and green. Although I will be the first to tell you that today, we did not bring our A game, and were beat fair and square. There is one thing though, one thing that needs to be said. My news feed is filled with you Mr. Newton, and not in a good way.

A video of you pulling a 12th flag down and throwing it to the ground like garbage. You see the one that people don’t realize is, Seahawk fans aren’t just fans. The 12th man is a community, a family, that regardless of winning stand behind our team and our community. So you see Cam, disrespecting the 12th man flag isn’t just disrespecting our team, it is disrespecting the fans that back our team. A community that feeds and clothes the homeless, a community that raises funds for families in hard times, a community that helps a 3-year-old girl battle cancer, a community that has more grace and respect than you could imagine. You see cam (sic), while you are practicing for your next game, our QB will be at Seattle Children’s hospital raising the flag that you shamefully threw to the ground, and he will be placing them on the hospital walls of little 12’s.

So Cam, the next time you think of disrespecting our flag, I hope you remember that even though you may have won this game, it is the Seahawks and the 12th man, who are the real winners. Win or lose we come with class, respect, a love for the game, a willingness to help others, love for God, and love for those surrounding us. So Mr. Classless Cam Newton, good luck and may God teach you what real winning looks like. — Sarah
