*Mo’Nique spoke yet again about the criticism of her open marriage to Sidney Hicks – this time, during a stand-up appearance that was filmed by an audience member and plastered onto YouTube.

The comedian says she asked Sidney for the marriage arrangement because she wanted to keep dating another man.

“Initially, when I asked for it, it was because I wanted to continue to see the gentlemen that I was seeing, and I felt comfortable telling my best friend [Hicks] that…and I didn’t want it to be where I was keeping anything from my best friend,” she explained. “That’s how it initially started, and when I tell you the conversations that we’ve had, it has taken me to a different place where I’m not even thinking of another man sexually, but still open to it.”

Mo’Nique went on to say that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s alleged open marriage gets a pass from everyone because they are good looking, whereas she is looked upon with pity.

“‘Oh, we hope Mo’Nique not gon’ let him just use her like that,’” she recalled people saying behind her back. “Because society looks at me and they see a woman that looks like [she] couldn’t possibly have a man that looks like that if there was not something else involved in it…No one knew that it wasn’t Sidney’s idea to have an open marriage. It was mine.”

  1. I understand not wanting to commit to one person, wanting to see other people. In my world, it’s called being single. Why get married?

I, for one, think you’re a beautiful woman Monique, but I don’t understand the concept of an open marriage whether it’s Monique, Jada, Angelique, etc.

  2. IDGI either. A friend of mine tried to rationalize open marriages/relationships to me by saying one person “might have a larger sex drive”, which just says to me y’all ain’t nothing but glorified fuck buddies. People rush into relationships way too fast nowadays because they either are too afraid or insecure to be alone but they don’t want the commitment that goes along with it. Why even bother getting married?
