Ice Cube on ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Oscar Snub: ‘I’m Not Surprised’

N.W.A.,*Folks may be upset that “Straight Outta Compton” only got one Oscar nomination (Best Original Screenplay) on Thursday (Jan. 14), but according to Ice Cube it’s nothing to be shocked over at all.

During an appearance Thursday on “The Wendy Williams Show,” the rapper-actor voiced that he isn’t surprised by the snub or the Academy’s lack of recognition for the critically acclaimed N.W.A. biopic, which chronicled the rise of the legendary rap group.

“I’m not pissed. You know, I’m not surprised,” Cube, a producer on “Straight Outta Compton,” told host Wendy Williams Thursday. “It’s the Oscars, they do what they do.”

“The people loved the movie, the people supported the movie — number one at the box office, over $200 million worldwide,” he continued. “I can’t be mad, you know.”

Despite not receiving any other nominations, Cube doesn’t look to be too worried about it, considering the treatment N.W.A. has received since it came on the scene and it finally getting its props with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

“It is nice to be recognized but N.W.A., you know, was anti-establishment, so, we’re used to people trying to dismiss what we gotta say,” the lyricist told Williams about the recent honor. “We’re used to the industry, really, you know, looking down on us. We were the black sheep of the industry, so we’re used to it.”

Although Cube took the snub in stride, the action brought major criticism as it marked the 2nd straight year that all white actors were nominated in Academy’s major acting categories. In addition to “Straight Outta Compton,” Oscar snubs were delivered to Will Smith and Idris Elba, who were thought to be shoo-ins for nominations for their work in “Concussion” and “Beasts of No Nation,” respectively.

“Of course, it’s disappointing,” Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs told “Entertainment Tonight” on Thursday. “[There were] a lot of tremendously good films. There’s “Straight Outta Compton,” “Concussion,” “Creed,” [2014’s] “Dear White People,” “Dope,” OK? I hope this isn’t discouraging for anybody and for filmmakers in particular. You just keep moving along. You keep out there. We will keep out there. We will keep pushing that pedal. We’re going to keep pushing it.”

Despite the Oscar snub, “Straight Outta Compton” could still gain major honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 30. The film is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Back in August, Cube’s fellow N.W.A. member, Dr. Dre touched on his excitement over “Straight Outta Compton,” telling ET at the film’s premiere that it gave him “goosebumps” when he watched it.

“It was goosebumps — a little bit surreal,” the Beats Electronics co-founder shared. “Some guys that came from nothing that created something, that’s just amazing.”
