The Socialist’s Journal: Favorite Columns 2015

*Here are my favorite columns of the year in a bunch of subsets.

First I will say that 2015 was an important year in how we view gender in this country. In Hope Solo and then Ronda Rousey we had two examples of how being a woman does not matter as much. Then again in Caitlyn Jenner we saw how being a woman is all that matters in certain circumstances.

I believe that even as Americans show themselves to avoid church in larger and larger numbers, the morality of our conservative Christian roots continue to shine through. This is how our criminal justice system can view a person as a minor and an adult at the same time. It is also how we can ignore plenty of red flags about a family but when sexual immorality becomes an issue all hell breaks loose.

The best thing about American history (our faithful confidence in democracy) is also the thing that has put the country in such a poor position around the world. We refuse to see how anyone could not and will not mimic our decisions. Understanding this is crucial to understanding the place of the United States in the world and how other groups of people relate to us. But this understanding is not easy, so we should be pushing our best young minds to grapple with this issue.

This column is no longer timely as some of these candidates have already dropped out. But the “Never Ending Candidate List” is probably the best column of the year.

I didn’t know that I would lose my mother to cancer later in the year when I wrote about Stuart Scott back in January. But just as I can see her influence in how I operate day to day, Scott’s tentacles in sports media become more obvious to me .
