Sam’s Club CEO’s Diversity Co-Sign Upsets White Men on Social Media

Rosalind Brewer*The views on diversity by Sam’s Club CEO Rosalind Brewer are not sitting well at all with some white men on social media.

Clutch cites an interview Brewer did on CNN in which she addressed the issues while bringing up a meeting she had with a supplier. The kicker is the supplier had no representation of women or people of color at the meeting.

“It has to start with top leadership,” Brewer said about how she promotes diversity within her company, Yahoo! Finance reports. “My executive team is very diverse, and I make that a priority. I demand it within my team.”

“Just today we met with a supplier, and the entire other side of the table was all Caucasian males,” she added. “That was interesting. I decided not to talk about it directly with [the supplier’s] folks in the room because there were actually no female, like, levels down. So I’m going to place a call to him.”

Upon making her comments, Twitter was ablaze with reaction from several people who labeled Brewer’s remarks racist towards white men, according to Yahoo! Finance, which noted that half of the eight people on Brewer’s executive are white men.

Nevertheless, Brewer’s critics on Twitter and Facebook could not be tamed as they vowed to never to spend any more of their money at Sam’s.

As a white male I’m deeply offended by the remarks of your employee,” one person wrote on Sam’s Club’s Facebook page. “We will not be patronizing Sam’s Club until this is corrected.”

Racism is alive and well in America,” wrote another user, who made it known, “I will never spend a dime in a Sam’s club!”

While the backlash against Sam’s is noteworthy, Clutch pointed out that it may result in a struggle to find a suitable place to shop as Brewer’s comments are backed by Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club’s parent company.

“For years we’ve asked our suppliers to prioritize the talent and diversity of their sales teams calling on our company,” Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon told Yahoo! Finance.

“Roz was simply trying to reiterate that we believe diverse and inclusive teams make for a stronger business,” he added. “That’s all there is to it, and I support that important ideal.”

So what say you?

Was Brewer wrong for speaking her peace on diversity or are her white male critics making too much out of being upset and feeling discriminated against based on what she said?
