Desperate R. Kelly Pleads to Black Folks to Buy ‘The Buffet’

R Kelly *Controversial singer R. Kelly recently took to YouTube to shame and plea to Black folk to buy his latest record, “The Buffet,” which sold measly 28,000 copies since it was released on Friday.

During the video, Kelly complained about the lack of support from fans and his record label, saying: “I want my people to get behind me.”

“I bust my ass going around doing shows to survive, but I do this for the love,” Kelly said in the video, which appears to have been removed. “But come on, at some point we gotta start supporting each other. Everybody supports every other category of music, we gotta start supporting each other.”

The album has been panned from critics, with Chuck Campbell of the Knoxville News Sentinel writing: “Kelly doesn’t invest much heart in the more traditional songs, despite their sleek arrangements, and the sex stuff isn’t offensive so much as it’s repetitive. And nothing gets old faster than a nearly-50-year-old man making redundant salacious innuendo.”

We’re gonna have to co-sign with Chuck on that last point, and perhaps others feel the same and that’s why they are not rushing to cop “The Buffet.” There’s also that growing pocket of folks who are no longer interested in financially supporting an accused pedophile, as Clutch notes.

Back in 2013, Spin Magazine profiled Jim DeRogatis, the music journalist who turned Kelly’s sex allegations into national news with a 2000 Chicago Sun-Times story.

“The saddest fact I’ve learned is: Nobody matters less to our society than young black women. Nobody,” DeRogatis said. “They have any complaint about the way they are treated: They are ‘bitches, hos, and gold diggers,’ plain and simple. Kelly never misbehaved with a single white girl who sued him or that we know of… No, it was young black girls and all of them settled. They settled because they felt they could get no justice whatsoever. They didn’t have a chance.”

Despite his abuse on black girls, black women continue to support Kelly, as evident by the female-led sign-along during his performance at the 2015 Soul Train Music awards. His discography consists of 13 studio albums, 5 compilation albums, 3 collaborative albums, and 48 singles – with many reaching some level of platinum status.

Meanwhile, August Alsina’s “This Thing Called Life” is projected to outsell “The Buffet.” Alsina’s sophomore effort is expected to sell between 30,000 and 35,000 units, while “The Buffet” is projected to sell between 28,000 and 33,000 units during its first week at retail. Kelly’s 18-track project was released December 11 and features Lil Wayne, Jeremih and Juicy J among others.
