*This past Sunday (12-13-15), “A Concert For a Cause” was put on by  Dawnn Lewis’ production company Morning Jewel Inc and The Los Angeles Urban League. The event provided an entertaining night of music and charity to benefit The K.I.S. Foundation, Inc., EmpowHER and the Los Angeles Urban League charities.

When asked, What inspired her to get involved with The K.I.S Foundation and EmpowerHer, Lewis mentioned that at different points in her career, she had met friends on and off the job who later sparked the interest of her involvement in the organizations she currently serves in. Actress Kiki Shepard, friend of Lewis, carries the sickle cell trait. They participated in the National Sickle Cell Censors about 15 years ago, which is when Lewis decided to take on the Advocacy herself.  Since then Lewis has served as a proud board member on The K.I.S foundation as well as an  advisory board member of EmpowHER.

“All three organizations are very, very close to me and dear to me and that it was important to me that I find a way to use whatever I had at my disposal to raise awareness for them and financial support.”

The Roster consisted of well known celebrities such as Doug E. Fresh, Angie Fischer, Erica Campbell, Tone Loc, Wayne Brady, Phil Lamar, and the list goes on. Many of the elites involved we’re eager and enthused about being apart of this event and jumped right on board with the cause.

“We all get asked to do things all of the time. A lot of them are very high profile projects, comic relief, and the national cancer society. A lot of them are worthy programs, a lot of them people have heard of. But what about that local non profit that doesn’t have that high profile, but is yet providing invaluable services to our seniors, our teens, and our schools?”

Many may not know that Lewis has had her hands in community work prior to her acting career. She has done motivational speaking and mentorship programs for the last 29 years. Lewis also worked with the Los Angeles Urban League as well as the National Urban League on and off during that entire time.

Lewis still manages to devote time to her roles as an actress in productions such as “Major Crime” and “Inside Out.” You can soon catch her animated voice over on the cartoon series “Home,” which is a up and coming television series based off of the movie of the same name, as well as the film “Big Hero 6.” Recently Lewis just finished wrapping up a movie called “Cycle” which is about breaking the generated cycle of domestic violence, and another feature film called “Revival” written and produced by actor Harry Lennox who stars in the weekly show “Blacklist.”

At some point in 2016, Lewis plans to bring forth information about her “Speaking Scholarship Tour” which will include the cast of the very popular television series “A Different World.” This tour is designed to encourage everyone to further their education combined with elements of financial literacy for college students and college bound high school students.
