*It was Angela Bassett’s turn on Sunday night.

The National Geographic Channel series “Breakthrough,” airing Sundays at 10 p.m., taps different celebs to direct hourlong episodes exploring a topic of their choice.

Bassett, recruited along with Ron Howard, Brett Ratner, Peter Berg and Paul Giamatti to lead episodes, decided to focus on California’s water shortage as part of the water crisis around the world, and to highlight the different solutions being developed by scientists.

“The thing with me that attracted me to water is that it’s critical. Without it, we perish. We literally can’t drink,” Bassett told TV critics in August during a TCA panel for the series. “If we don’t drink water for three straight days, you’re kaput. So it’s vital. It’s life giving. We need it desperately. And if we’re in space and looking at our Earth and we see all this beautiful blue, only one percent of it is fresh water that we can consume.

“Great minds, great experts, curious seekers have to find ways to continue this resource for us. Not only for us, but for generations to come for our children. We made a mess in some place, but there are interesting, smart, brilliant people who would come up with innovative ways, and it may save us.”

Below, Bassett talks about one of the solutions to the water crisis in Ethiopia that blew her away:
