Hated Pharmaceutical Exec Buys Rare Copy of Wu-Tang Clan Album for $2 Million

*There’s good news and bad news regarding legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan.

The good news is that the only copy of its album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” was auctioned and indeed sold. The bad news, Bloomberg revealed, is the winning bidder was none other than pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli, the man responsible for raising the price of  the AIDS drug Daraprim from $13.50 a pill to $750.

As for how much Shkreli paid for the “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,” the price was $2 million for the album that Wu-Tang de facto leader and producer RZA once described as the audio version of a “scepter of an Egyptian king.”

Shkreli and his sizable price increase for Daraprim generated much hate among the press and folks like Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who called him out for his greed.

Despite having the album in the hands of Shkreli, RZA offered a bright spot in a statement provided to Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

“The sale of ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin’ was agreed upon in May, well before Martin Skhreli’s [sic] business practices came to light,” the statement revealed. “We decided to give a significant portion of the proceeds to charity.”

In addition, the Clan’s condition of the album’s buyer not releasing music from “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” for 88 years has been lifted as Shkreli now has the option of streaming the album or release it for free for music fans.

Whether or not Shkreli goes there is anyone’s guess.
