*While promoting his latest film “Chi-Raq,” Spike Lee has spoken about the Chicagoans who have blasted him for turning the city’s gun violence situation into a comedy.
Among the criticism is not having any “savages” in the film, as EUR previously reported. Now, Chance the Rapper is adding his voice to the criticism, calling Lee’s film “goofy,” “exploitive and problematic.”
In a series of Tweets, the rapper wrote: “Let me be the one from Chicago to personally tell you we not supporting this film out here,” Chance said of Chi-Raq Friday. “That shit get ZERO love out here. Shit is goofy and it’s a bunch of ppl from NOT around here telling you to support that shit. The people that made that shit didn’t do so to ‘Save Lives.’ It’s exploitive and problematic.”
He also criticized Spike’s reworking of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – an Ancient Greek comedy about women withholding sex from soldiers in order to end the Peloponnesian War.
“Also the idea that women abstaining from sex would stop murders is offensive and a slap in the face to any mother that lost a child here,” he said.
Chief Keef, Lil Bibby, and Rhymefest have also criticized Lee’s portrait of the city, with the latter believing the director owes the city of Chicago an apology, and Chief Keef’s manager telling GQ, “If somebody is going to do a Chicago movie and call it ‘Chi-Raq’ it needs to be somebody from Chicago.”
Chance eventually returned to Twitter to explain that his criticisms weren’t directed at Lee. “Just clarifying, I’m not damning the director of the film or anyone involved in making it. I am damning the film and the ideas it conveys,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Chance will be the musical guest on SNL on December, where he will make history as the show’s first major indie act.
