*Gerald Green of the Miami Heat experienced a medical emergency this week when he was rushed to the hospital after he began screaming at the top of his lungs during the middle of the night while in his Miami condo. When paramedics arrived, he was found unconscious and bleeding.
TMZ reported that multiple witnesses said Green was acting strangely in the lobby of the condo, and that it took several people, including emergency personnel, to restrain him and get him on a stretcher and into an ambulance.
Gerald, 29, was having one of his best seasons in the NBA and is currently averaging 10.3 points per game, but on Nov. 3, he missed the Heat’s game against the Atlanta Hawks due to his illness.
Green’s teammate, Mario Chalmers, stays in the same condo and remained with him while he was rushed to the hospital. Team officials didn’t reveal the nature of Green’s illness, but he has regained consciousness, Rolling Out reports, and Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Gerald “is safe and is healthy.”
As ESPN notes, Spoelstra declined to offer any further specifics on Green’s condition but teammates Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade said they have reached out to him to offer their support.
“Obviously our minds are on Gerald right now,” Spoelstra said. “We’re grateful that he’s safe and he’s healthy right now. Our thoughts are with him and his family.”
Dwyane Wade said he spoke to Green on Thursday morning and was told “he was doing better.”
“Whenever a teammate is sick or there’s an illness, we all reach out,” Wade said. “That’s just what we do. Whenever something happens in one of our teammates or family’s lives, we all reach out. That’s a part of this basketball family that we’re all in.”
Players have not been told the specifics surrounding Green’s hospitalization, and Miami authorities have not launched an investigation into Green and his actions leading up to his hospitalization.
“Knowing that our brother is OK, we can go out and play with an eased mind,” Heat captain Udonis Haslem said.
