A Shattered Huxtable Family: Ebony Magazine’s #BlackFamilyIssues Cover

ebony cosby cover shattered

*The iconic Huxtable family of NBC’s “The Cosby Show” is taking visible hit on the cover of the November 2015 issue of Ebony magazine.

Focusing on the black family, the publication decided to put a throwback picture of the classic sitcom’s original cast: Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Lisa Bonet, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tempestt Bledsoe and Keshia Knight Pulliam.

Nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that the cover picture is edited to show it shattered in an attempt to symbolize a currently broken family that was once considered a powerful force back in the day.

The sight of the shattered photo obviously brings Cosby to mind as it divides those who have seen it. Some praise the picture as negative attention the embattled comedian and “The Cosby Show” deserve in light of the sexual assault and drugging allegations Cosby is facing amid him feeling entitled to allegedly have sex with women without their consent.

On the other side are those who feel that “The Cosby Show” and what it accomplished should have nothing to do with what Cosby did in his personal life. During its heyday, the series and the Huxtables were held in high regard in the black community as it displayed a black family being in a positive light during a time when Ronald Reagan was president, the war drugs was in full effect and crack cocaine and AIDS were making headway with destroying the black community.

So how do you feel about Ebony’s Black Family Issues cover with the Huxtables? Is it right that “The Cosby Show” be held accountable for Bill Cosby’s alleged indiscretions or should the sitcom still hold a revered place in the black America?

Sound off below.

  1. It’s disgraceful, distasteful and disrespectful to the whole cast and crew that worked so hard to build that legacy. If u want to attack Mr Cosby then shatter his pic alone not a whole cast of innocent people. Ebony sold out in 2011 so it looks like they are going the way of BET selling out to stay relevant. Attempts like this never workout well in the end. Sure ppl talk now but I’ll never buy another Ebony issue again…print nor online. Besides blogs like this are much better and offer more substance. To bad Ebony Magazine just shattered their own legacy.

  2. @ Ty, I totally agree with your post. This is so sad to attack the entire cast as they had nothing to do with MR. Cosby’s dalliances. I think Malcolm Jamal was just addressing this last week how they are not being vilified via the media – when their merits as thespians should be judge and not due to their associating with Bill Cosby!

  3. I understand….I’ve grabbed my bat plenty of times and had to be talked down from busted up my TV when I hear Raven-Symoné open her FAT mouth on the view……SMDH
